"One has only learnt to get the better of words... And so each venture Is a new beginning, a raid on the inarticulate With shabby equipment always deteriorating In the general mess of imprecision of feeling, Undisciplined squads of emotion... But for us, there is only the trying. The rest is not our business." -- T.S. Eliot

Unfortunately, many don't realize that we are in fact governed by nature. Instead, we (meaning politicians, business people) proceed to push nature, and all it's realities, out of our conscience, into some other dimension of not wanting to deal with the issues. Furthermore, the general public really is unaware of the severity of the issues we face. I believe the task is to better educate the public about nature (rather than going gungho on "science and technology").
Our education system of the past 20 years has forgotten to include the fundamental component of our existence--ecology and nature. Understanding urban and rural areas is important as well. These should be inserted into curriculums in high school or earlier--the earlier the better. And they are not difficult topics to understand.
Yes, we do need to increase the quality of science and technological education, but we must also have our compasses set by the natural processes of this earth. Technology can help solve problems, but technology is not the save all. We must attack the root of problems, at government policies that encourage excessive and unintelligent, resource-consumptive, pollutive behaviors and developments, and at the local education level.
Bruce,
Your thoughts are spot-on.
"We must also have our compasses set by the natural processes of this earth. Technology can help solve problems, but technology is not the save all."
You are absolutely right. The "roots of problems" must be addressed, not simply what grows from them. You have wise things to say, friend. I pray your voice is strong and steady. It is needed.
